FRIDAY ! FREEBIES: Making a Basket

PATTERN DOWNLOAD HERE.

Alvina found this attractive basket pattern on craftsy.com. It’s not too difficult and you have so much latitude in choosing your fabric. You can make it as whimsical or as sober as you want it to be and you don’t have to store fabrics in it. I can imagine all sorts of kids toys and craft supplies in these.

MONDAY ! REVIEW: Mixed-media Art Quilts with Beryl Taylor

Today’s review is of Mixed-media Art Quilts with Beryl Taylor. The images you see on the front cover of the DVD are exactly what you learn to make in this video. The effect of the layering, cutting and hand stitching is spectacular. You can do both bright or quiet color combinations. This technique is also a way to use up scraps of fabric that you perhaps no longer love with would work well when combined with others.

Mixed-media Art Quilts DVD

Anyone who is  interested in adding interest and excitement to their quilts would enjoy this DVD. The video, although clear enough, is more inspiration than instruction. If you already know how to quilt, you should find it easy to follow. Beryl’s techniques are time-consuming but worthwhile if you want to create a true ‘work of art’.

Beryl Taylor is soft-spoken and easy to listen to. She was born and trained in art in England but now makes her home in the US. The videography of the DVD is clear and easy to see and follow. Each technique is shown in detail.

Where can you get the video? I found this video in my public library but there are multiple sources for it. You can see a preview below and can also find the video for download for $14.95 at http://www.interweavestore.com/mixed-media-art-quilts-downl….  If you’re willing to do the work, you can find more parts of this on youtube.

Creative Inspiration

Do you ever wander through home furnishings stores or fabric stores just to inspire your creativity? I sure do. I consider these sort of wanderings a feast for the eyes and inspiration for my next project.

Doing a little online browsing today I came across this blog and its free quilt patterns and tutorials. I’m not suggesting that you make any of them but rather use the opportunity to get ideas. Even though we’ve been given a bit of a weather reprieve before winter, it will soon be upon us and most of us like to spend those shorter darker days lighting up our lives with fun projects.
