MONDAY ! REVIEW Two books by Kaffe Fassett

Today’s review is of two books by San Francisco born, London based fabric and quilt designer, Kaffe Fassett. His fabrics are truly spectacular and some of his quilt designs have been shown in major museums in England.

Brilliant Little Patchworks

Brilliant Little Patchworks

Kaffe has written many books on quilting and the first book I’m looking at today is Fassett’s Brilliant Little Patchworks: 20 stitched and patched projects using Kafe Fassett fabrics. The book is excellently illustrated with photography by Debbie Patterson.

My favourite projects in this book are the leafy apron, the summer flowers table quilt and the big tea cosy.

The second book is Kaffe Fassett’s Brilliant Patchwork Cushions: 20 Patchwork Projects Using Kaffe Fassett Fabrics. Photography is again done by Debbie Patterson and is so inspiring. Templates and instructions are included for all twenty projects.  Quilting knowledge is required but the projects are quick and fun. My favourite projects in this book are the brilliant square cushion, the lotus cushion and the roman stripes pillow.

Upsides (both books):

The book has the patterns, templates and instructions you’ll need. The designs are unique and modern. The book is beautifully designed and laid out. Easy to follow.

Downsides (both books):

The patterns and designs assume a level of sewing proficiency that is higher than beginner. You will have to find fabrics to replace the ones recommended since they use only his fabrics. I suspect that selecting fabrics will be half the fun of working on these projects.

What’s Happening at Sweet Pea Quilting This Week?

It was a dark and rainy day at Sweet Pea Quilting and Spicey was asleep on his personally quilted chair and all was well in the quilting world.

Spicey does the only sensible thing to do on a rainy fall day.

Spicey does the only sensible thing to do on a rainy fall day.

Can you tell I want to write a novel? LOL Okay – so yesterday was a typical day in the life of Sweet Pea Quilting which did include a fall day and Spicey in his chair. Alvina was teaching a class and assisting customers.

First the class. As you know, each season, Sweet Pea Quilting puts out a selection of fun and informative quilting classes. You can see the current list here. Yesterday’s class was entitled, Slanted. Alvina will be teaching this class. It uses the Strip Tube Ruler for accurate 45 degree angles, of which we will be cutting many. The quilt uses seven different colours of fabric and has a bit of modern flair to it.

 Love making bags?

camdenbag2 Coloured Strips….We are in the process of making a new Tote bag for the store. This one uses a pattern by Aunties Two and it is called Camden Bags. We have chosen 29 different fabulous batiks and using a new product called “ Duet Fuse” which is a precut double sided fusible strip of batting. It is already cut at 2 ½” inches wide so it nicely nestles into the 2 ½” batik strips we are using. You can see the roll in one of the pictures. Using this product has made this project a breeze so far because everything is pre cut for you. I Have not used this product before this and so far I like it! Stay tuned to see the finished product.
